#LGBTIFoundersDay | Gay Star News Live with Sandi Toksvig and Wayne Sleep
For too long, getting ‘older’ has been aligned with negative and disempowering descriptions of age. To challenge this, Gay Star News - hosted by Barclays - held the first LGBTI Founders’ Day this week on 24 September.
Guests Sandi Toksvig (@sanditoksvig), Wayne Sleep (@Wayne_Sleep), Linda Wilkinson (@LindaSWilkinson), Jason Jones (@trinijayjay) and Robyn Ochs (@robynochs) were recognized as the first-ever LGBTI Founders and in today's show share their heartwarming and tearful stories on being LGBTI Founders.
Sandi Toksvig, the beloved TV presenter, came out swinging in defense of the LGBTI community saying that although we’ve come a long way in terms of rights there ‘was still a long way to go’.
Fighting back tears – the lesbian presenter of The Great British Bake Off and QI made the comments at an event celebrating the first global LGBTI Founders Day.
Hosted in conjunction with Barclays, Gay Star News launched the LGBTI Founders’ Day this year. It wanted to celebrate the contributions of LGBTI elders to the rainbow community around the world.
Toksvig cried during her speech when she told the story of a gay couple she knew. John and Roger had been together for more than 20 years when Roger was in a serious car accident.
When it looked, Roger, was likely to die, John contacted his estranged family to give them a chance to say goodbye. But then they cruelly locked John out of seeing Roger at the hospital. He didn’t go to his funeral and John doesn’t even know where Roger is buried.

Life is not a timeline. We all age, and should do so with full ownership because after all, it’s literally unavoidable.
