Seal Deeply Cut By Illegal Gill Net

In spite of good binoculars and scopes, the OCN rescuers are not always sure of entanglements. They cannot always see if a piece of net or fishing line is attached to a seal or just random rubbish lying on the beach. They have spotted a gill net, but they are initially unsure if it is an entanglement or not. They do not want to disturb the colony unnecessarily and they decide to crawl in. Antoine spots the gill net - it is indeed an entanglement! The seal is quickly netted and the rescuers start the process of cutting line by line, until there is no more danger for the animal.
Gill nets are merciless, they are designed to trap anything they can catch, and they never let their prey go. That's why they are illegal, even in Namibia. This seal has severely infected wounds from deep cuts and the rescuers need a few minutes to remove all plastic.
It was a painful and stressful rescue for the animal, but we did the best we could. He has been given a second chance at life and we are hopeful he will make a full recovery. 🦭
