A bright yellow finch was once caught and set inside a cage.

Her keeper was gentle. Her water was always clean, her belly never empty.

Still, she dreamed of the world she had known before. So long ago now that she could not tell if it had truly happened, or if it lived only as a dream she returned to for comfort.

She remembered flying so high she scorched a feather against the sun, watching it curl and vanish as it drifted back toward the earth. She remembered the wind pressed warm against her breast, the effortless way her body knew how to fall into formation without thinking (or fear).

The cage taught her that she wasn’t a finch easily confined, or easily kept.

One day, when the cage door opens just wide enough, she will remember again. She will touch the sun once more.
