This week, we were greeted with some positive, and then some negative, cruise developments. With cruising starting, and then reports of outbreaks on cruise ships, it had us questioning whether cruising would really resume this year. In fact, the writing is on the wall that we won’t be back out to sea until some time in 2021. Find out why with our 6 signs that cruising will not resume in 2020.

One reason cruising won’t resume in the U.S. this year has to do with the current status of the coronavirus in the country. While it looked like things were on the down slope at the end of May, this summer we have seen a widespread outbreak. Further, several of the states with the largest increase in cases are those with busy cruise ports, including California and Florida.

Further, ports of call around the world have begun instituting travel restrictions. Some countries, such as Spain, are banning cruise ships outright with no end date in sight. Many locales are also requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test days before entering a port. As the requirements change, it will be nearly impossible for cruise ships to find places to dock and comply with current local restrictions.

The CDC has not been kind to the cruise industry either. This makes it very unlikely that cruise ships will be allowed to sail in U.S. waters any time soon. With the CLIA announcement just the other day that cruise lines have voluntarily suspended cruising through October 31st, this provides further evidence that cruising may not start up at all this year, especially if there is a second wave or continued outbreaks here or abroad.

Several countries are still battling the pandemic, which has made it difficult for cruise lines to repatriate crew. In fact, thousands of crew members still remain on ships. So, if the cruise lines have had so much trouble getting crew home, it will likely be even more difficult to get crew back onboard, safely and in good health. This will take time, especially with travel restrictions and around the globe.

Once crew are back, they will need time to train, as well as update ships to comply with new safety protocols. Installation of new equipment, updating venues, applying social distancing markers, and other ship wide changes will need to be performed before ships set sail. The addition of new equipment and updates to systems will take time, further delaying the restart of cruising.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, cruising will not start in the U.S. in 2020 due to onboard outbreaks. Cruising in Europe has just begun, and already, several ships have had cases of COVID-19. While the number of cases is small, multiple ships have reports of crew and passengers testing positive for the virus after cruises have departed. This demonstrates that it is still not safe to cruise, and that current health and safety measures are not sufficient to protect travelers. So, it is possible that cruising could be delayed until there is a treatment or vaccine available. Though, we are hopeful that is NOT the case!
