Sheila E. Reveals Rape, Love of Her Life in New Memoir

Legendary performer Sheila E. experienced the highs and lows of life as an entertainer at a very young age.

The daughter of famed percussionist Pete Ecevedo spent her time in recording studios surrounded by the biggest names in Latin jazz and salsa.

But the Oakland, California native also became a sexual assault victim.

"I was raped," said Sheila E.

The abuse was at the hands of cousins and a babysitter. Sheila E. was only five years old.

"It's part of my testimony to share with people; a lot of people -especially women- feel they are the only ones, but they're not."

That story and revelations about her engagement to Prince and her first love, Carlos Santana, are told by the star in her new memoir, 'The Beat of My Own Drum.'

"There were times when it was a little bit challenging. As a celebrity, you try to keep your life as private as possible" said Sheila E. about the writing process.

The drummer, percussionist and singer who played her first show with her father when she was five, continues to perform and couldn't be happier than when she's on stage.

She's even released a new album titled 'Icon.'

"I'm living glamorous and glorious," said Sheila E.

Fans can watch her perform live in New York City at the Gramercy Theater on Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.
