1972 Earl Scruggs Sons Make A Beautiful Bluegrass Recording. Their 1st Vinyl Record

I am very proud of this clip taken from my 1972 feature length & TV documentary made with Earl Scruggs and his sons Randy and Gary. My film is titled Earl Scruggs: His Family And Friends and it includes Earl playing with Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and others.

This clip presents Earl's sons recording their first album with their producer, country rock 'n' roll musical legend Charlie Daniels, who at the time was accompanying Earl and his band.

It was beautiful to watch Earl Scruggs support for his sons as up-and-coming musicians. It was for me more evidence that Earl Scruggs was not only a great musician but he was one hell of a decent and honorable man.

The album was critically acclaimed but unfortunately did not make the Scruggs boys famous. I also love this scene because it shows what a 24 track recording was like back then and presents the 16-year-old brilliant flat picking guitarist, Randy Scruggs. The album was titled: GARY & RANDY SCRUGGS ALL THE WAY HOME.

Earl Scruggs was an American country bluegrass musician noted for popularizing a three-finger banjo picking style, now called "Scruggs style," that is a defining characteristic of bluegrass music. This style of play allowed for a wide range of melodies and rhythms to be played on the banjo, a significant advancement over the traditional frailing or clawhammer styles.

Scruggs was born in Flint Hill, North Carolina where he learned to play the banjo at a young age. His first professional gig was with the "Morris Brothers" when he was just 15. However, it was when he joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1945 that his innovative banjo playing started to gain wider recognition. Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt left Monroe's band in 1948 to form the Foggy Mountain Boys, also known as Flatt and Scruggs.

Their 1949 recording of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," used in the 1967 movie "Bonnie and Clyde," became an iconic piece of American music and won Scruggs his first Grammy award in 1968. This song, along with the theme song for the television show "The Beverly Hillbillies" called "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," solidified Scruggs' position as a notable figure in popular culture. Both pieces showcased the "Scruggs style" picking that he pioneered.

Scruggs continued to play and record music throughout his life, often collaborating with a variety of musicians across different genres. He won several awards for his contributions to music, including a National Heritage Fellowship and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Other clips from my documentary present Earl in a variety of musical collaborations that were significant for several reasons:

They introduced Earl Scruggs and his sons to new audiences who might not have been familiar with his work in bluegrass, increasing his popularity and expanding his fan base.
They demonstrated the potential for cross-genre collaborations, proving that musicians from different backgrounds and styles could come together to create unique and exciting music.

The collaborations helped to bridge the gap between traditional roots music and the contemporary sounds of the era, further blurring the lines between genres and showing that music could be a unifying force.

They inspired future generations of musicians to explore collaborations outside their respective genres, paving the way for countless cross-genre collaborations in the years to come.

Randy Scruggs had a distinguished career as a musician and producer. He won four Grammy Awards and was named Musician of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards three times.
