So, like a lot of questions in law the answer to the question of should I get medical treatment after an accident is – it depends.

What do I mean by that? Well, should you go to the doctor if you got in a minor accident and you’re not feeling any pain or discomfort at all? Then I’d say you might not need to get medical treatment.

However, if you suffered moderate to severe injuries or if you’re feeling any pain or discomfort in your body after the wreck, then 100% go get medical care after the accident.

How soon should you go to the doctor after a car accident? As soon as you possibly can. Now it may be you’re taken to the ER by ambulance. But if you are not then I would say after the police come and you fill out a report, get to the doctor.

A lot of people call me up a day after an accident and tell me they’re hurting in their neck or back. I tell them to hang up the phone and get to the doctor right away. The longer you wait the more it hurts your case.

Why? Well, the insurance company is going to use the fact that you didn’t see medical treatment right after the accident to argue that you’re not that hurt. People who are really hurt generally speaking get the medical help they need.

Some people ask should I go to a doctor or the emergency room after an accident? I don’t care who you see, just get the medical care you need!

Another question I get asked is what should I tell a doctor after a car accident? Tell the doctor everything. Every single pain and point of discomfort you are feeling at the time or have felt. If its not in the medical records it does not exist.

But in short your health insurance should pay your medical bills. Then FYI, they’re going to seek reimbursement for the bills they paid on your behalf. By the way, your own auto policy may pay some of your medical bills through your medpay coverage – guess what they’re going to want to be reimbursed for the money they paid on your behalf too.

A lot of people wonder how to find a doctor after car accident. I want to emphasize that not knowing how to get medical treatment should not factor into this. If you have an attorney, they will know how to get you the medical treatment you need. But I want to emphasize something to you that you might not have thought of. And that is, focus on your health not your insurance claim. What do I mean, if you walk with a limp the rest of your life, then all the money in the world is not going to compensate you. So advocate for yourself, do the research, talk to an attorney, find the medical help you need no matter what.

Ok one last thing – but it’s important. The value of your entire case depends on your injuries and your medical treatment. And it’s a sliding scale. If you just suffered a sprained back for example, then your case isn’t going to be worth that much. But if you suffered a brain injury or herniated disc for example, then your case will be worth quite a bit.

And the medical treatment you get usually correlates to the severity of your injury.
