Active Fire Lookout Tower on Lava Butte - Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Oregon

Lava Butte is a cinder cone volcano that was created just over 7.000 years ago in what we now call west central Oregon. Lava Butte is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The actual Newberry volcano is 1,200 square miles, about the size of Rhode Island!

A road leads to the top of this cinder cone affording panorama views of the entire region. An active fire lookout tower sits at the top of the cone and is normally closed to the public.

Today the fire lookout tower was open for a rare public viewing. An enthusiastic and very informative fire lookout staff member gave us a tour of his domain, called a "cab". It is complete with cooking and sleeping arrangements and is quite comfortable. The area he is responsible to watch for fires is called his "view shed".

Many thanks to the fire lookout staff member for your wonderful narration!
