Parsons Corporation managing on-premises and AWS data protection with Commvault
Parsons uses Commvault intelligent data management for workloads across AWS S3 Standard-IA and AWS S3 Glacier cloud storage locations, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, plus physical servers.
Ben Roper, Enterprise Backup and Recovery Specialist, explains how he uses Commvault to manage the whole on-premises and cloud backup and recovery environment. With Commvault, he protects around 1.5 petabytes on the front end and 14 petabytes on the back end. The protected workloads include file data, file servers and SQL server data. He says Commvault gives him a 97% to 99% deduplication ratio.
With roughly 15,000 employees, there are almost daily restores or requests for data. He says, “It’s comforting to know that we can always fulfill those requests when they come through and restore the data that's needed.”
Parsons has already replaced tape backups with AWS cloud storage. Now it is working on an initiative to move the whole backup environment to the cloud.
“Moving into the cloud has been really simple,” Roper says. He explains their strategy for using AWS S3 Standard-IA and AWS S3 Glacier. Through the Commvault integration with AWS, he can quickly create a secondary copy to store in different AWS regions, ensuring data is highly available.
A single Commvault dashboard for on-premises and cloud data management streamlines work and provides reporting. “I've set up reporting tools, so I get an audit report every day,” he explains. “It's very quick and easy to just glance and see it.”
Commvault backup alerts are also helpful. He describes the automation that alerts users to any issues and how Commvault granular role-based access and control (RBAC) feature can allow specific users the ability to check on their own jobs, but see nothing else. “It makes it easy for everybody to be able to see what's going on,” he says.
