Shallow Dakota Fire Pit. Sometimes, due to circumstances beyond your control due to rocks, sand soil or a lack of tools and time, it is not possible to dig a proper Dakota Fire Pit as depicted in the Bible of Bushcraft by the many False Messiah's out there. I have a German Mil-Tec Tunnel Tent erected in a stealth camp scenario that I am testing - more on that in a future episode, but I didn't have a suitable stove for making a brew or cooking a meal. What I did have was my belt kit and some old Half Pick that didn't last very long.

Therefore, in an attempt to A) be as stealthy as possible, B) reduce the risk of me burning down the Wheat Crop a few metres away, I dig shallow pits connected by a short trench, line the trench with two tin cans with their bottoms punched out, (from the dogs food), and backfill with earth and sods to keep an airway open. I raise the Fire Pit end by placing rocks around it and I use dried waxy grass as my Fire Tinder which, causes a lot of smoke, but eventually after blowing a lot of hot air into the tunnel, I get it burning satisfactorily and enjoy a well deserved cocktail Coffee/Chocolate Brew.
