South Africa remains one of the most violent and one of the most unequal countries on earth. While life at the top is good, life at the bottom is getting worse: the wealth gap is becoming a chasm. Last year an average of 45 murders took place across the country every day; armed robbery is rife; and car hijackings - often with brutal outcomes for the victims - are commonplace. Every year, over 110,000 cars are reported stolen in South Africa, with the true figure believed to be closer to 200,000.

But as crime booms, so does the business of fighting it. Hundreds of private security firms across the country now fill vital roles of law enforcement you’d normally expect to see carried out by the police: protecting citizens and recovering stolen property.

Marcel Theroux (Louis' brother) travels to the South African capital, Pretoria, to meet the men doing one of the most dangerous jobs in the city.
