Jean Peltier: From Watchmaker to Physicist
Jean Charles Athanase Peltier was a French physicist who initially worked as a watch dealer before turning to scientific research at 30. He authored numerous papers and is best known for discovering the Peltier effect, which describes thermal changes at junctions in a voltaic circuit. In 1840, he introduced the concept of electrostatic induction, explaining how electric charge distribution is influenced by nearby objects. His contributions significantly advanced the understanding of thermoelectric and electrostatic phenomena.
