Sequels: After Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde
With his "The Song of the Earth," Mahler invented the hybrid symphony/song cycle, offering a challenge to later composers that quite a few took up successfully. Here are sequels by a diverse list of names: Zemlinsky, Turina, Shostakovich, Bernstein, Penderecki, Gorecki and Burton. If you love the Mahler, you'll surely want to explore at least some of these pieces too.
