this year beretta released the apx carry
a single stack version of their popular
full-size modular apx handgun i've been
playing with the apx carry for a while
and I have some things that I really
like about this compact self-defence
pistol quite a lot of things actually
and of course there are a few things
that I don't really care for let's start
with the basics then I'll move on into
the negatives and finish on a positive
note on what I like about this gun some
of these are subjective and others are
born out by facts and data first the
beretta 8px replaces the Nano I never
cared for the bread and Nano and I'm
happy to see them replace it with a much
better design pistol the apx carry
weighs 21 ounces unloaded which is about
standard for other striker fire agains
of this size beretta says it's nineteen
point eight ounces but we weighed it
with the empty eight round magazine it
features a three inch stainless steel
barrel that is nitrated for protection
from rust and corrosion the overall
length is five point six three inches
and it's four point one seven inches
tall beretta says the width of this gun
is nine tenths of an inch but it's
actually ninety-nine hundredths which
one rounded is an inch wide I get why
they want to market it is under an inch
and in that respect they're accurate we
tested the trigger pull and it was
averaging around five and a half pounds
and beretta air is on the conservative
side claiming between six and six point
five pounds is where the trigger will
break speaking of the trigger it's a
decent trigger out of the box without
modification but it does require you to
pull it fully to the rear before a break
so that you're pulling it into the grip
of the gun there's also no perceptible
reset of the trigger and you have to
bring it completely forward to reset it
for the next shot in a competition gun
where rapid strings of shots would be
needed this would be a deal-breaker but
for a defensive firearm where every shot
should be deliberate and intentional
this is actually a benefit the grip of
the gun is a standard 18 degrees off of
the 90 of the 1911 which is much better
in my subjective opinion than the 22
degree grip of the Glock 43 which is
about the same size the stippling and
the checkering on the grip give it a
very comfortable gripping surface for
positive control without being overly
aggressive there is
mechanical decocking button recessed
into the polymer grip frame the AP
x-series was designed to create a safer
way to disassemble the pistol without
pulling the trigger and this carries
into the apx carry just press this
button with a punch pen or other small
tool and it D cocks the gun so it can be
disassembled safely this brings us to
the first thing I dislike about this gun
is that it requires some sort of extra
tool to take it apart
I think beretta skimped a little bit
here and could have just as easily
included a takedown lever I found that I
can use the edge of the follower on
either of the magazines to turn the
screw head the rim of a shell casing or
a dime will also work so it isn't the
end of the world the magazine release is
reversible for either right or
left-handed shooting but the slide lock
is only found on the left side of the
gun so it's not truly ambidextrous this
is something that beretta it could have
easily accomplished and it's becoming
pretty standard on most of the guns
coming out today really that's all I
have to offer in the negatives what I
like about this little pistol far
outweigh is the negatives first it
shoots really well the trigger pull is
long but it's smooth and crisp it has a
very definite wall to begin your trigger
press and the ergonomics make it a great
natural pointer lobe or access makes
recoil very manageable part of why it
shoots so well is the awesome steel
sights they're driftable and replaceable
and I like the solid black rear sight
that gets rid of the distracting dots
people tend to focus on the dots that
are there to draw your eye to the sights
and they miss use them as aiming points
the front sight still has a dot to help
you pick out the front sight faster but
a clean horizon edge to help you get
better and more precise aim all of the
ergonomics at this gun just feel great
in the hand and I've got beefy miss so
that's saying something for a pistol
this small I've had a real struggle
holding on to the Glock 43 in the
Springfield XDS subcompact
but I had no such issues with the apx
carry one feature that I really liked
that some people have been critical of
is the slide striations th
