CHARACTER DESIGN | Is Tracing cheating? How to use PureRef (gather, organize, save & trace images)

Hello everyone. In today’s tutorial, I am going to attempt to cover two things at the same time.

First, I will have a little chat with you regarding tracing. This topic is needed, as we can be tempted at times to trace when designing characters or scenes. Believe it or not, tracing is wildly used nowadays by professional artists around the globe. However, is it okay to trace and, if so, when is it acceptable to do so? Some of you might say it is cheating. I understand. I thought so myself years ago. Surprisingly enough, tracing is not cheating if you use it as a guide, or tool to help you start a project. The key, here, is that like any other tool, if used correctly and responsibly, it is worth it.

Next, I will show you how to download and use a free application called PureRef.
If interested, go to PureRef.com.
Why talk about this application? Most importantly, why in this tutorial?

Well, since we will be talking about tracing today, and since we talked about where to find reference images in last’s week tutorial, I thought I would show how you can use the app not just to collect, organize and save your images, but also, how you can use it to trace.

So as you can see, there is, after all, some kind of method in my madness! 😋
