You need to have realistic expectations when buying San Martin watches
Overall detailing is quite good
Bezel action is very good
For the $200 - $240 I paid per watch they are reasonable quality. They are well packed and include sizing tools.
However, there are some issues you need to be aware of. I had purchased 4 San Martin watches and had to return 2 of them for defects. To their credit and professionalism, they had a US returns address. They approved the returns efficiently and credited my credit card back quite quickly. I ordered a blue dial and a black dial “tuna can” Marine Master Seiko homage, and a blue-black and all back dial version of their 600M Submariner Homage.
The main issue you have to be realistic about is that there are limits to the QC they can do at the price they are charging. The back dial variant of this Marine Master had a completely defective Seiko NH35 movement that ran hours slow. The back dial variant of the 600-meter Submariner homage had bad machining on the screw-down crown tube, and it felt like you were crushing gravel as you screwed it down. It is obvious they are pushing these out the door as fast as possible and hoping for the best, or these two issues would have been detected.
I have no issues with blue dial Marine Master I kept. However, the band pins on the Marine Master band are a real pain to resize as there are no directional indicators for pin extraction orientation on the band, and no instructions on pin extraction. I had to pull up a Youtube video on the specific topic of San Martin Marine Master pin extraction to make sure I would not damage it.
The machining on the 600M Submariner Homage is very crisp. So crisp in fact the case has quite a sharp edge. The sharpest I’ve ever seen on a watch. As the case edge does not contact my wrist directly it’s not mission-critical, but a bit more honing and you could shave with it.
Last is the San Martin rubber strap for the 600 M Submariner homage. It was paired with the sub homage on the San Martin site, so I took the plunge and bought it. Given the value in the watches I expecting something pretty nice for the near $50 I paid. It’s OK, but not that different than a $20-$30 generic rubber strap, plus it’s not even sized correctly for the watch. As it jams up against the case with the sections forced out and doesn’t drape properly.
The upshot is that they make a nice watch, but you need to keep your expectations in check. Not everything is as polished as you might expect, and IMO they are obviously pushing these units out the door a bit too fast with respect to doing proper QC.
