2.2 Barbarians Come to Britain (Summary)

[Vortigern’s Request]

Long ago, Britain was full of different Celtic tribes.
One of the kings, Vortigern, was tired of fighting off northern enemies.
So, he called for help from the Angles and Saxons, offering them land.

[The Arrival of the Anglo-Saxons]

The Angles and Saxons sailed across the sea, fought Vortigern's enemies, and liked Britain so much that they stayed!
Soon, more of them arrived, filling up the land.

[Celts Pushed Out]

The Celts tried to fight back, but the Anglo-Saxons took over the south and east, creating seven kingdoms.
This part of Britain became known as England.

[The Dark Ages]

Some Celts lived in peace with the Anglo-Saxons, while others retreated to places like Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
The Anglo-Saxons left few records, so we call this mysterious time the Dark Ages.
