Guillaume Lekeu - Adagio pour Quatuor d'Orchestre (1891)

Adagio for String Trio and String Orchestra (1891)

[NOTE: For best performance, view FULL SCREEN at HIGH RESOLUTION]

This is a deeply heartfelt and mournful work for strings by the young Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894), which is subtitled "Les fleurs pâles de Souvenir" (The pale flowers of Remembrance). Lekeu was devastated by the untimely death of his teacher and hero César Franck in late 1890, after an accident involving a horse-drawn trolley. The young Lekeu gave voice to his feelings of loss and pain in this highly charged, intensely lyrical composition, which incidentally contains some remarkably unconventional writing for strings.
