Southwest Airlines Says "GOODBYE" to Boeing 737! Here's why
Southwest Airlines – the carrier long known for its strong loyalty to the American aircraft manufacturer – has just made a surprising announcement regarding Boeing, revealing new huge plans for its massive fleet.
How surprised are this move? Why could it reshape the future of this airline?
Let’s find out!
"We have a long history with Boeing, dating back more than 50 years to the day we commenced service with three Boeing 7 3 7 aircraft serving three cities. They're part of our history and part of our future as we continue to recognize the many efficiencies and cost savings of a single fleet."

Bob Jordan, the CEO and president of Southwest Airlines, has commented.
According to Southwest Airlines' latest fleet update, released on April 23, 20 25, the largest low-cost carrier in the United States is currently operating a formidable fleet of Boeing 7 3 7 aircraft, with 782 active planes and 20 parked, bringing the total to 802 aircraft. This figure not only highlights the impressive scale of the fleet but also reflects the airline’s unwavering commitment to the 7 3 7 family, the only aircraft type Southwest has operated since its inception. A closer look at the fleet structure shows that the 7 3 7 700 remains the backbone of operations, with 323 aircraft in service, making up the largest portion of the fleet. Following closely are 257 Boeing 7 3 7 Max 8 aircraft, a modern variant of the Max series, and 202 Boeing 7 3 7 800 aircraft, one of the most widely used commercial jets in the world today.

However, the airline is not merely maintaining numbers, it is actively restructuring and modernizing its fleet. In the first quarter of 20 25, the airline officially retired 14 aircraft, including 12 from the version 700 and 2 from the version 800.
This airline also announced plans to adjust its route network soon, with a strong focus on high-performing routes while gradually reducing service on lower-yield ones. However, the airline emphasized that it does not plan to implement any large-scale capacity cuts; only about 1.5% of its capacity is expected to be trimmed in the second half of 20 25, as a flexible response to an anticipated softening in travel demand.
