Massive fire hovers near New Mexico state line

the 600 square mile wallow fire continues to have everyone right across the border in new mexico on edge -- wondering when and if the flames are going to cross. tonight officials in arizona have the tough job of telling some people who live in alpine and nutrioso that they no longer have homes. crews haven't even been able to assess what's been lost in greer yet. the fire isn't much closer to new mexico tonight than it was last night. however, evacuation orders in several communities in arizona remain in effect tonight. crews continue to prep roads and draw burnout lines to keep the fire from making its way into new mexico. the good news is the wallow fire hasn't moved much closer to new mexico....its still about a mile away. but the bad news is... some new mexico towns are far from being in the clear tonight. cristina rodda is live near luna with the latest. the hazy sky look ominous... but we've learned the fight to keep the wallow fire away from luna is gaining ground.. even if it only means the fire is not getting worse. thluna fire stastion is the new gathering ground for locals. "its very helpful - we need to know how close it si so we can prepare." melody kiester and her son shawn are here helping melody's parents protect their home. "you know before we came over here we were raking all the wood" they are not stressed about the wallow fire - but they are on alert. "down where they lived, we can't hear the horns, so we are relying on neighbors if that comes." they are part of a phone tree - so if the fire gets too close they will know to get out. "i dont think there's any threat from luna today, now if we have unusual wind activity, and it stands up then we are dealing with a different situation." the coty manager says the fire can cross into new mexico anywhere..but they are focusing on luna and the area around quemado. "they did a lot of back fire last night and yesterday" and luna fears are high - but hoping for the best. i think its almost time for this fire to tire out. its done, its time, me too. let her die." there are approximately 22-hundred firefighters trying to keep the fire from spreading to luna. reporting live near luna. cristina rodda - kob eyewitness news four. late this afternoon governor susana martinez announced she's headed to reserve tomorrow to meet with state and local officials. she will be briefed on the emergency management operations. here's a live look at the sky over albuquerque....w here the haze is starting to thicken some. the ongoing smoke has forced the city to extend it's air quality alert through the weekend into monday morning. it was originally supposed to expire this morning. the city reminds people to keep their windows and doors closed -- and avoid outdoor activities if possible
