The London Beer Flood (1814)

October 17, 1814, London: A 22-foot-tall vat at Horse Shoe Brewery exploded, releasing 388,000 gallons of beer in a deadly tsunami. The 15-foot wave of porter crashed through St. Giles, demolishing houses and drowning 8 people including a mother and baby. Victims were found floating in cellars. The beer wave was so powerful it swept away buildings and flooded entire streets. At the inquest, the jury ruled it "an act of God" - no one was held responsible. The brewery was actually compensated for their lost beer. One of history's strangest industrial disasters. #LondonBeerFlood #1814Disaster #BeerTsunami #IndustrialAccident #LondonHistory
