Project Philippines 6 offshore patrol boat (OPV) worth PHP30 Billion!
The proposed offshore patrol vessel (OPV) project, which consists of six vessels valued at PHP30 billion, will go through government-to-government procurement, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenza said Thursday.
"Yes, it will be in G-2-G (Government-to-Government) procurement mode," Lorenzana said in a message to the Philippine News Agency when seeking updates about the project.
Government-to-government is an advantage because it does not require large capital outlays, has sovereign guarantees, and equipment will be obtained more easily and faster.
When asked whether Australian defense contractors and Austal shipbuilders would be given a contract for the OPV project before the end of the year, the DND chief said negotiations were still ongoing.
"We have not yet completed negotiations. The two sides are still discussing the details. There has been no definitive decision to date (Thursday)," he added.
OPV is part of the Horizon Two Armed Forces of the Philippine Modernization Program and is expected to replace World War II corvettes and mine sweepers that are still in the service of the PN today.
Six OPVs are expected to be obtained for the Navy once the contract is approved. Austal plans to build ships in the Balamban shipyard, Cebu.
The company offers a larger version of the 80-meter long Cape patrol boat used by the Australian Navy and the Australian Border Force.
