How To Get Rid of Strawberry Legs – The Best Home Remedies
Strawberry legs (otherwise known as comedones) are those little dark bumps you get on your legs that look similar to the seeds on the skin of a strawberry. They’re often confused with a shaving rash, however they're actually either a build-up of dirt, oil, skin bacteria; ingrowing hairs or a skin condition. It can occur on other parts of the body such as the arms and buttocks. But it is mainly found on legs as those are often shaved the most.
many people suffer with “strawberry legs” unnecessarily. The condition is quite annoying especially because it is reoccurring. Every time you shave your legs, you get those horrible black dots all over them. For some people they get to the point of either having hairy legs or strawberry legs
The most 3 common causes of strawberry legs are
1.) Keratosis Pilaris: Also known as “chicken skin”, keratosis pilaris is when the skin produces too much keratin and blocks hair follicles, causing bumps on the skin to develop.
2.) Enlarged Pores: These open comedones are caused by too much production of oil or sebum that normally clog the pores by trapping the dead skin and bacteria. Once they are exposed to air through the process of shaving, they magically oxidize and appear darker.
3.) Folliculitis: Is caused by follicle irritation triggered by shaving and the presence of ingrown hairs. The hair follicles under the skin may have a tough time penetrating back through the skin again after shaving. Hence, creating a blockage that can result in redness, small bumps, irritations as well as dark pores.
How do I get rid of or lessen strawberry legs?
The most comprehensive way of treating strawberry legs is to open the pores, exfoliate, close pores, keep pores closed, keep your skin and surfaces clean, stop shaving, and eat foods that are beneficial to your skin. Here's how :
Preparing skin for exfoliation.
Take a warm/hot shower to open up your pores.
Exfoliating with a scrub.
Simply buy a body scrub, or make your own with just a few ingredients. Mix sugar, salt, and lemon juice into a thicker paste, and use this to scrub your legs/arms for 2-5 minutes on each arm/leg with your hands moving in circular motions. Be firm but don't press too hard, you're trying to get the dirt and oil out not irritate your skin. The longer you scrub the better. The sugar and salt exfoliate the skin, and the lemon juice is a natural disinfectant that fights bacteria. You can also incorporate aloe vera gel into your scrub for oil-free moisture.
Finish with cold water, ALWAYS.
Rinse your exfoliated area with really cold water. This closes up your pores so dirt and oil doesn't get trapped back in. This works by telling your skin it's cold, so it constricts its pores keeping dirt and oil out.
Ice cubes.
Next, and this is an extra step, put an ice cube or two in a zip-lock bag and run it along your arms/legs a few times. Go slow and go over everything once or twice. No need to freeze your skin. This makes your pores constrict even more so dirt and oil doesn't find it's way in.
There are other methods which will also get you good results
What you eat.
Now a dieting tip is to eat foods that promote healthy skin. Fruits and vegetables with vitamin C, for example. A quick Google search will give you a big long list. Basically lots of plant foods, nuts, eggs, and lean fish - which contains Omega 3 fatty acids and healthy oils.
Baking soda
Make a paste out of baking soda and warm water (about 1 tablespoon of soda per 1 teaspoon of water) and apply it to your legs on the problem area. Let it sit for about three to five minutes before rinsing off the mixture with cold water. The baking soda works as an anti-inflammatory and also exfoliates the area. If you want to add more texture to make this paste more effective, add a tablespoon of ground oatmeal. Repeat each day and notice results.
STOP SHAVING.
While shaving is a quick and easy (and painless) hair removal method, it removes your skins natural oils by scraping them off, as well as opening up your pores. It doesn't even remove the hair follicles it just shortens them and can cause ingrown and double hairs. Probably the best method to remove hair which grows less and less painful each time is waxing. Waxing pulls your hair out of your pore, and combined with an exfoliating scrub is the most effective way of getting clear skin.
Another alternative is epilating, which is a machine that plucks hair very rapidly. However this can be more painful because it's a constant discomfort and it doesn't cover a large area quickly. Of course there is laser hair remove
