Bumpy Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet Flight and Wind Shear in Knoxville
#CirrusAircraft #VisionJet
In this episode, We fly the Vision Jet back to McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, TN to give my friend, Randy Harmon, a ride back to the Nashville area.
This flight was between Knoxville, TN and Smyrna, TN at a planned altitude of 15,000 feet. The flight covered 156 nautical miles and its duration was a short 40 minutes. At one point, our speed across the ground, due to a 65 knot tail wind, was almost 415 miles per hour. What was notable about this particular flight was the light to moderate turbulence in the descent into Knoxville as well as potentially hazardous wind shear encountered during landing.
Wind shear is defined as a sudden change of wind velocity and/or direction.
Wind shear may be vertical or horizontal, or a mixture of both types. ICAO defines the vertical and horizontal components of wind shear as follows:
Vertical wind shear is defined as change of horizontal wind direction and/or speed with height, as would be determined by means of two or more anemometers mounted at different heights on a single mast.
Horizontal wind shear is defined as change of horizontal wind direction and/or speed with horizontal distance, as would be determined by two or more anemometers mounted at the same height along a runway.

A couple viewers provided recent suggestions about alternative camera angles and positions. I often carry passengers, so it is impractical to mount cameras aft of the pilot and copilot seats. Nonetheless, I will continue to work on providing new and interesting camera angles.
As you might imagine, a single engine jet does have operational limitations compared to multi engine jets. The Generation 1 Vision Jet is a 300 knot aircraft with a 28,000 maximum altitude. It is nearly perfect for my mission and fun to fly.
There are a couple exceptional things about the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet, in my opinion, that make it a leader in its class. In particular, the forward visibility from the interior of the aircraft is simply stunning. In addition, the aircraft was designed to carrying the pilot and up to six additional passengers. The passenger seating is configurable, and the cockpit is spacious and roomy. What makes it different, is that all passengers have forward facing seats, which is atypical of an aircraft of this class, at least right now.
