How much does a male fitness model or physique competitor weigh? What is a good realistic goal weight to strive for for your first physique competition? That's what we're going to cover in this video.
Just recently I received this e-mail from Paul who wrote:

"Im 30 years old 6ft1 187.9lbs with 13.8% body fat. I would like to compete in mens physique this year in about 6 months lets say june or july. I would like to be 200lbs at about 4% bodyfat in this time. I know it would be better for me to get down to about 8 or 10% and then bulk in this way its more effective. But my dillema is competing in 6 months so I have a time frame and wont be able to cut down for 8 to 10 weeks and then bulk and then cut thats to much time. Would you think its ok to start bulking until I reach about 210lbs and then cut? Because I need more size to compete with the mens physique guys please tell me the right way to go about it, thanks"

While I appreciate Paul's drive and desire to compete and improve. He has an unrealistic goal of being 200 pounds and ripped in such a short period of time.
To break down the numbers:
He is 187 pounds @ 13% bodyfat
He wants to be 200 pounds @ 4% bodyfat
That is literally gaining 30 pounds of lean ripped contest muscle while simultaneously losing 16 pounds of bodyfat. And that's NOT Going To Happen for a Natural Competitor.
I'm not trying to be mean or put Paul down, I'm just being honest. When you see a bodybuilding or physique competitor on stage at 200 pounds, they are generally a lean 230+ pounds in the off season and then diet down to 200 pounds for competition. You'll never see a 187 pound guy bulk up and cut his way up to a contest weight of 200 pounds.
But that doesn't mean he should get discouraged and not compete. Very few physique competitors weigh 200 pounds on stage. In fact, if you knew how much the typical bodybuilding and physique competitors weigh on stage you would be surprised by how light most of them are. They look bigger because they are so lean and cut, but their body weight is actually quite low.
Rather than thinking you need to be 200 pounds on stage, shoot for a more realistic 170 - 175 pounds on stage. And while you should strive to do your best for your first show. Don't get hung up on being perfect or thinking you have to win the whole show.
After all it's your first time, it's a learning experience. Go out there and enjoy the process of getting into contest shape. Learn from the experience and focus on making improvements for the next time you compete.
Bodybuilding and fitness is a lifestyle, it's not a one shot deal. Take your time and enjoy the process of making progress over the long term.
