Fun fact: The M113 owes its name to the Hellfire missile, which in fact is an acronym for “HELiborne, Laser, FIRE and Forget.” The irony is that most real life variants of this missile aren’t even fire-and-forget. Either way, this APC-turned-tank-hunter is a real box of tricks your enemies won’t see coming!
If we’re going to talk about the M113, we first need to go over the missile that gave it teeth — the legendary AGM-114 Hellfire.

Originally designed as a heliborne missile, the AGM-114 was to be a precise, long-range weapon against Soviet tanks. It’s precisely this legacy as an airborne weapon that gave the Hellfire an edge, swapping the TOW missile’s wire guidance for a more advanced and liberating laser-guided system. As a result, the Hellfire gained extended range and fire-and-forget capability, while also allowing it to be launched from the air.
