This Marin, California, empty-nest couple wanted their home to be the spot where everyone wanted to hang out. Their college-age kids, their friends and their kids’ friends. To transform the classic cottage into an entertainer’s dream, the couple put together a remodeling team that included designer Jennifer Messina.

Messian, who used Houzz Pro software to manage the project, created welcoming interiors that look impressive without feeling too buttoned up. Dark wood flooring, high ceilings and lots of windows and folding glass doors seamlessly connect indoors and out and establish a lively atmosphere. The couple’s artwork collection adds pops of color and personality throughout the home. And a spectacular backyard features zones for everything — swimming, lounging, cooking and dining.
