The Manchester Terrier, also called the ‘Gentleman’s Terrier’ is a vibrant, energetic, and lively dog that has a big personality for its size. This dog has become a loveable companion dog over the years.
Manchester Terriers are believed to have originated from England and are said to be the oldest recognizable terriers. It is said that the Manchester Terrier was specially bred from Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet during the 19th century by a man known as John Hulme.
John’s intention was to develop a breed that would hunt down and kill rats quickly.. to curb the poor sanitation that was witnessed in England due to the increasingly large and growing rat population. Through successive breeding, the Manchester Terrier was developed and used for the sport of rat hunting and rabbit coursing.
A famous Manchester Terrier who gained attention in the 1820s in the national sporting arena was called Billy ! Today, the Manchester Terrier breed is an excellent companion and a great watchdog.
