Deborah Frances-White (Clip - Alphabet game) The power of play
The power of play – transforming work, learning and creativity Deborah Frances-White, Comedian, writer and corporate speaker.
From an early age we are brought up to believe that success depends on hard work. That’s true, says Deborah Frances-White, but only sometimes. The times when hard work doesn’t work, however, are of growing importance in today’s world, where raw physical and mental labour are increasingly susceptible to automation. Putting a lot of conscious effort into a task doesn’t help when that task is best tackled free of anxiety and with the help of the unconscious mind – and that includes most creative tasks and a great deal of learning. The problem, of course, is that “play” is seen as childish and trivial – even though, Deborah maintains, both work and play are both just processes, albeit very different. The trick is to choose the right process according to the end result you’re looking for. You wouldn’t play if you were aiming to dig a hole fast. On the other hand, if you want to write a screen play or even learn a language, play has a great deal to offer. Deborah is the wittiest speaker we’ve ever had at Learning Technologies, and this opening keynote will – as is only appropriate – be playful and full of laughs. But it will also give you cause to think as Deborah explores techniques for instigating effective play, and explores how games can help.
