Jelly Bean Science Experiment - A Guide for Parents and Teachers
This science experiment we conducted with jelly beans. The video is only for suggested explorations that go along with the science portion of our STEM Jelly Bean Science and Engineering packet.
First, we did a simple sugar and water exploration. What will happen to sugar in water? Since the jelly bean is mostly sugar will the same thing happen? What about other solutions you might have in your home? Liquids like orange juice or apple juice? We used water, vinegar and maple syrup (we DO NOT recommend using harmful chemicals).
After five minutes we recorded our findings. We put the jelly beans back in the solution for another 10 minutes and then recorded the findings. Finally, we let the jelly beans sit for another 35 minutes ---they sat in the solutions for a total of one hour. We recorded the final results in the science journal worksheet.
Your kids might want to extend the experiment. It was neat how the maple syrup didn't change and the hypothesis is that the maple sugar already has a lot of sugar molecules and less water, so the jelly bean didn't dissolve.
Have fun!!!!
