Kathy Meis on How to Reach the Right Readers
As an independent author without name recognition in a crowded book marketplace, it can be really hard for readers to discover you. You don't have the advantage of brand recognition like big-budget authors do.
Kathy Meis argues that starting narrow and focusing on an audience you can absolutely delight with your books is a great foundation. As your readers become familiar with the reading experience that your books deliver, your name can evolve into a micro-brand. As soon as someone can say your name and understand and recognize that reading experience, they will buy based on your name.
Specificity is one way to narrow down the audience targeted by your books. Speak to a particular audience and describe your work to them in a way they understand. Bring them into that reading experience and they will recognize if your work is something they're interested in.
