Indian Navy’s Investment In Indian Ocean Region Paying Off

As the ripples of the Israel-Hamas war are being felt in the Red Sea, with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting ships with drones and long range ballistic missiles, Somali pirates have made a splash in the western Indian Ocean. Three such incidents of piracy have been thwarted in almost three days, thanks to timely intervention of the Indian Navy, aided by some prompt coordination and collaboration from Indian Ocean countries. Piracy has never really gone out of fashion, it has been around for 3000-odd years, with phases of ups and downs, says former Naval intelligence officer Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande (Retd). Just like navies, pirates are also good at learning on the job, he told Bharat Shakti Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale. He also spoke about how drone warfare may be increasing but there’s “no such thing as a drone war”. There’s some sane advice for the Maldives as well.
