Cardamom or cardamum popularly known as Elaichi, is a spice made from the seeds of plants Elettaria and Amomum in the Zingiberaceae family. Both genera are native to the Indian subcontinent.
Cardamom has a strong, unique taste, with an intensely aromatic, resinous fragrance. India, formerly the largest producer, now rank two after Guatemala in the world.
It very difficult to grow Cardamon by seeds. Instead Seedlings/suckers can be used for propagation. 18-22 months old seedlings are used for transplanting. Harvesting commences from the third year onwards. But good yields are expected from 5th year.

इलायची का मसाले के रूप में उपयोग किया जाता है। यह दो प्रकार की होती है - हरी या छोटी इलायची तथा बड़ी इलायची। छोटी इलायची का पौधा सदा हरा तथा पाँच फुट से १० फुट तक ऊँचा होता है। तीन चार वर्ष में फसल तैयार होती है तथा इतने ही काल तक इसमें गुच्छों के रूप में फल लगते हैं।
भारत इलायची का दूसरा सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक देश है | इलायची की खेती पुरे भारत में की जाती है |
