Book notes on "The Creative Habit" (Twyla Tharp)

These are book notes about Twyla Tharp's book "The Creative Habit".

- Learn to be creative: the book is filtered through Tharp's experience as a world-class dancer and choreographer but she explains how it can be applied to any field. She knows what it takes to become a top performer.

- Create a box for your project: For her choreography, she uses physical boxes to hold everything. That could be tapes of old dance routines or tapes of dance practice that she pulls from. For your project, you might have a notebook. If you're writing a screenplay, your box might be a board with index cards. It can be digital. But have one place for storing things.

- Go for a walk: She likes to go to The Met for inspiration. You might not have access to that specific museum but you might have local museums to check out. And if not, you can still get a lot of a walk. It gives you time to think. Changing your environment at all might be the most important part of getting unblocked.

- Learn the fundamentals: She writes about Leonardo da Vinci and his mastery of the nuts and bolts. I couldn't make this video if I didn't have a handle on terrible doodles.

- Where will you be five years from now? Look at the people and books you surround yourself with. I talk about plus, minus, and equal. Find someone better than you, equal to you, and behind you. One will teach you, one to learn alongside, and one to pass your learnings on to.
