Curator's Corner: Race in the Intelligence Field

As famed icon and WWII spy Josephine Baker once wrote, “Surely the day will come when color means nothing more than skin tone, when religion is seen uniquely as a way to speak one’s soul, when birthplaces have the weight of a throw of the dice and all men are born free, when understanding breeds love and brotherhood.” The journey to that day is ongoing.

Today listen in on a discussion with intelligence professionals who’ve traveled that path. They’ll share how they encountered the issue of race in the intelligence community with the candor and intellect that got them through intense careers that weathered conscious and unconscious racism. Our esteemed speakers are:

Darrell M. Blocker was a US Airforce analyst and CIA officer. He was deputy director of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center and chief of the Africa Division. He is a recipient of the CIA Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal and is the Chief Operating Officer of MOSAIC - Multi-Operational Security Agency Intelligence Company.

Cassandra Chandler is a retired Assistant Director/Special Agent, of the FBI. She managed, directed, and led criminal, terrorism, and cybercrimes investigations and foreign intelligence activities, receiving the Senior Executive Service Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive under President George W. Bush. She is a motivational speaker, community relations builder, and innovative strategist.

Spy Museum Advisory Board Member Melvin L. Gamble served in multiple senior executive positions at the CIA, including Chief and Deputy Chief of Stations in Africa and Latin America, Chief of Central Asia and the Caucasus, Special Assistant to the Associate Deputy Director of Operations, Deputy Chief of European Division, and Chief of Africa Division. He is currently President of Gamble Advisory Group, a security consulting firm.

Spy Museum Advisory Board Member Malcolm W. Nance is a retired US Navy terrorism intelligence collector, code breaker, and interrogator. He is a counterterrorism analyst for MSNBC and the author of many books including the New York Times best seller Defeating ISIS: Who They Are, How They Fight, What They Believe and his latest, Plot to Destroy Democracy: How Putin and His Spies are Undermining America and Dismantling the West.

International Spy Museum Historian and Curator, Vince Houghton, will moderate the discussion, and then you’ll be able to ask questions via our online platform.
