A Prophet of Liberation: James H Cone - November 2022

James H. Cone is one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century. His God was a God of liberation, and his no-hold-barred, liberationist Christian theology sought to speak to, challenge and change the obstacles that face Black people in their daily struggle to be full human beings in a world overshadowed by White supremacy.

The father of Black theology, his books spanned almost fifty years and include his magnum opus 'God of the Oppressed' (1975) and 'Said I Wasn’t Going to Tell Nobody' published a few months after his death in 2018. Anthony Reddie will introduce his life and work, and explore his ideas, impact, and the challenges he leaves all of us today.

Professor Anthony Reddie is Director of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Culture, University of Oxford and Extraordinary Professor of Theological Ethics at the University of South Africa. The author of numerous books, his latest is 'Introducing James H Cone: A Personal Exploration'.

We are very grateful to Benefact Trust for their generous support of this programme.
