The Ward Charcoal Ovens - Ely Nevada 2023

We have arrived in Ely Nevada on a stormy day in spring of 2023. A short ways south of town lies the Ward Mining District. The area has been active since the early 1860's when silver and gold was found nearby. Early mining methods of dealing with silver ore was to crush it, concentrate it, then smelt it with fire. The smelting process required vast amounts of charcoal. Six beautiful stone ovens were built more than 150 years ago to make the charcoal. Workers would pack the ovens full and slow burn them for about week. The result is charcoal and it was taken to the mining mills nearby to smelt the silver ore. There was not a tree to be seen for many miles around the mines.
