Online Lecture: Marking Time - Jewish Calendars During the Holocaust
The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is a time of introspection, of looking back on the year that has passed, and forward to the one to come. Join us for a fascinating lecture, presented by Sara Shor, Manager of Yad Vashem's Artifacts Collection, featuring assorted calendars created during the Holocaust. Each calendar has its own unique story: some were printed in the ghettos; others written painstakingly in concentration camps on scraps of paper, sometimes traded for a daily ration of bread. For those who struggled to create them, maintaining a Jewish calendar meant that time was not imposed by the Nazis, but rather continued to serve them as a familiar anchor in a period when their whole world was uprooted.
