What are locomotive bogie types-- Bo’Bo’ and Co’Co’ classified by UIC and where are they used?
A locomotive bogie (or Truck, US) is a chassis which caries wheel sets and traction motors.The UIC broadly classifies locomotive bogies as Bo'Bo' and Co'Co'. A Bo'Bo' (also B-B) bogie has two axles and one traction motor attached to each axle. A Co'Co' (also C-C) bogie has three axles and one traction motor driving each axle. Being lighter a Bo'Bo' bogie is used where speed is important. Most multiple unit trainsets and high speed passenger locomotives such as the Indian WAP-5 class will have Bo'Bo' bogies.
But Bo-Bo bogies can suffer wheel-slips when heavy loads are to be hauled. The extra set of wheels and traction motors enables a Co'Co' bogie to more effectively counter wheel-slips and can therefore haul heavy loads. Co'Co' bogies are also better suited to tackle steeper gradients.
