Evan Pittson - Viola Beat (H90 PolySynth)

At last, my YT channel is up to the present (ish). I recorded this "duet with myself" at the end of February, and took the opportunity to create my own drum loop to solo with. I always love the sound of the up-tempo jazz thing on the cymbals with funk on the drums, à la Actual Proof by Herbie Hancock, or Face First by Gary Willis. This is the first in what I hope are many "Viola Beat" moments.

Over the past few years, I've been tweaking my sounds with the @EventideAudio H90 PolySynth algorithm. For me, this sound engine is a miracle for bowed strings — like playing a whole new instrument. The tracking is lightning fast, you can bring to bear all of your existing technique, and like playing a synthesizer, you can control the waveform, filter and octave transposition in performance. Although my use of it is a bit restrained on this recording, you can seamlessly control the envelope of the filter with your playing dynamics, and the sensitivity of that control as it pertains to different instruments. The bow is a perfect interface for this, being able to apply pressure to open and close the filter mid-phrase, to darken or brighten the timbre like a physical instrument.

This preset I made is called "SteinerPhone" in honor of the first EWI controller that Michael Brecker played in the early-mid 80's, and modeled on some of the synth tones Mike played on such iconic tracks as "In a Sentimental Mood" (Steps Ahead) and Original Rays. All of the magic here is coming from the H90 PolySynth, with a little bit of ambience from the SP2016 Reverb.
