Mugger & Joe Carducci @ Quimby's Bookstore, Brooklyn

PUNKCAST3523 Mugger & Joe Carducci in Conversation at Quimby's Bookstore, Brooklyn on Sep 1 2017.

Mugger, a.k.a. Steve Corbin, was in a band with two black kids while still in school. They practiced in Mugger's house because his friends' parents wouldn't let him over. Mugger quit school and ran away from home. He was living at the beach in 1978 when he came across Greg Ginn and his band, Black Flag, in Hermosa Beach. Mugger went from gofer to roadie to opener to soundman to partner in SST Records.

Joe Carducci was one of the founders of Systematic Record Distribution in 1978 Portland through which most independently released records from the US, UK, and Europe found their way into the best American record shops. He began ordering Black Flag records from SST and saw and met the band in 1980 once Systematic moved down the coast to Berkeley. He was also involved in the Berkeley-based labels Optional Music (Dead Kennedys, Negativland, Der Plan, Voice Farm, Live at Deaf Club...) and Thermidor (Nig-Heist, ONO, Toiling Midgets, SPK, Birthday Party...).

At Quimby’s, Mugger and Joe talk about Mugger’s early days in the Los Angeles music world of surfers, skateboarders, hippies, punks, sex, violence, and the LAPD. They discuss SST itself and how it worked with bands and sold records back when the music industry was happily shoveling dirt on rock and roll, whistling while it worked. There's even a question or two about The Nig-Heist records and tours.
