Unconvinced about Afterlife? Does it matter?

Is is nesessary to believe in the afterlife? reincarnation, heaven, hell? Or is there a logical approach to living from uncertainty but with wisdom make choices which are most likely to result in beneficial outcomes. There is a Buddhist story where the Buddha compares people to gamblers, who have to make a smart bet.
