Caminho do Tejo: A Travessia Sagrada entre Azambuja e Santarém rumo a Fátima (Episódio 1)

Iniciamos hoje a nossa grande peregrinação pelo Caminho do Tejo, rumo ao Santuário de Fátima. Este é o Episódio 1, onde percorremos a etapa entre Azambuja e Santarém, um trajeto marcado pela lezíria, pelo Tejo e por aldeias ribeirinhas cheias de história e tradição.
Partimos da estação ferroviária da Azambuja e seguimos pelos campos agrícolas até à Vala Real, atravessando depois a tranquila vila de Reguengo. Continuamos pela estrada até Valada, onde percorremos a aldeia de ponta a ponta, encontrando uma embarcação avieira, a praia fluvial e a sua igreja. Aqui, o Tejo mostra a sua identidade mais profunda.
Mais à frente, junto à estação de tratamento de águas, lembramos que este caminho é partilhado com o Caminho Central Português para Santiago. No marco seguinte, as duas setas — amarela e azul — recordam-nos que todos os caminhos de fé se cruzam.
Chegamos a Porto de Muge, onde a Ponte D. Amélia reina sobre o Tejo, e seguimos pelo estradão que nos leva ao Baloiço do Peregrino, um dos pontos mais icónicos desta etapa. Depois de uma pausa bem merecida, avançamos até ao marco das cheias de 1975, testemunho da força do rio.
Aproximamo-nos de Santarém, passando por Omnias e pela Fonte da Junqueira, até entrarmos oficialmente na cidade. Pelas ruas antigas visitamos a Igreja da Misericórdia, Santa Maria de Marvila, Santa Maria de Alporão, Santa Maria da Alcáçova e Santa Cruz — um verdadeiro património espiritual.
Terminamos na estação ferroviária de Santarém, concluindo a primeira etapa desta peregrinação que nos levará, passo a passo, até Fátima.

Today we begin our great pilgrimage along the Tejo Path, heading toward the Sanctuary of Fátima. This is Episode 1, covering the stage between Azambuja and Santarém, a journey shaped by farmlands, the Tejo River, and riverside villages rich in history and tradition.
We start at Azambuja’s train station and walk through agricultural fields until reaching the Vala Real, then crossing the quiet village of Reguengo. We continue along the road to Valada, exploring the village from end to end, discovering a traditional avieira boat, the river beach, and its church. Here, the Tejo reveals its deepest identity.
Further ahead, near the water treatment station, we remember that this path is shared with the Central Portuguese Camino to Santiago. At the next marker, the yellow and blue arrows remind us that all paths of faith eventually meet.
We arrive at Porto de Muge, where the D. Amélia Bridge stands proudly over the Tejo, and follow the dirt road leading to the Pilgrim’s Swing, one of the most iconic spots of this stage. After a well deserved pause, we continue toward the flood marker of 1975, a testament to the river’s power.
As we approach Santarém, we pass through Omnias and the Junqueira Fountain before officially entering the city. Through its ancient streets, we visit the Church of Misericórdia, Santa Maria de Marvila, Santa Maria de Alporão, Santa Maria da Alcáçova, and Santa Cruz — a true spiritual heritage.
We finish at Santarém’s train station, completing the first stage of this pilgrimage that will lead us, step by step, all the way to Fátima.
