Banana Drawings
"A recurring theme in my work is the intersection of technology and the human experience. Through whimsical drawings and ironic manipulation of space, I try to convey an ‘illusion of reality’ or a ‘virtual’ reality as we call it today. Mechanical configurations married to quintessential organic structures often dominate parts of my chosen subject matter, as in my Banana Drawings. By juxtaposing various formations of banana peels against machine-like parts, challenging settings evolve. Many seem out of place, jarring almost. In this series, scale and repetition are important aspects of the presentation.”"
For this series done in the 1970s, Pfeiffer chose the banana as a motif because of its “organic, human-like” quality, its softness, and its familiarity. He developed seven variations—the Portable Banana, Electric Banana, Do-It-Yourself Banana Kit, Split Banana, Recycling Banana, Two-Way Banana, and the Banana Coupe (pronounced “coo-pay”). The banana image was printed in color, then Pfeiffer added drawn mechanical elements to it.
Come explore paper in "Drawn, Cut & Layered: The Art of Werner Pfeiffer" at the Toledo Museum of Art Feb. 6 - May 3, 2015.
