This video is of the startup, taxi, engine runup and takeoff of the Save-A-Connie (now Airline History Museum, web: www.airlinehistory.org) group's Super Constellation, N6937C, from Glenview Naval Air Station (northwest of Chicago, IL) on August 25, 1991. A very hot, humid and hazy day. Our destination was Kansas City Downtown Airport (KMKC). You're viewing pretty much the raw footage with little editing. Consequently, you'll see and hear much of the engine runup short of the runway before takeoff. Back when these piston engine propeller airliners were flying every day and still today with piston prop aircraft, the engines are runup to test for things like magneto output (generally two per engine), propeller pitch and RPM. Today a jetliner simply taxis onto the runway, throttles up and shoots down the runway.

When the Constellation finally gets airborne, listen closely for the crew to call out "METO power" (maximum except takeoff power-we took off at takeoff power) and then "climb power". Note the corresponding changes in engine sound as a result of the power reductions made by the flight engineer. We flew northeast then east out of NAS Glenview over the western shore of Lake Michigan and then turned west and lastly proceeding southwest to K.C. Things seen below after takeoff include the Edens Expressway, Chicago Botanical Gardens and the Lake Michigan shoreline along, perhaps, Winnetka, IL. Enjoy the flight!
