Kubrickian Irony: The Dark Humor of Stanley Kubrick

The irony in Kubrick’s oeuvre isn’t exactly like rain on your wedding day. It’s more cosmic, more karmic, more mean, and more pointed. And it’s not exactly understated, either — it oozes out of every movie, as black and as bleak as humor can be. Which, if you think about it, is pretty appropriate for capturing things that are as sublime, and absurd, like violence, space travel, and sex. Above all, it’s a way to depict, not just a misfortune, but a tragedy, and Kubrick’s movies are nothing if not full of tragedies. In this video, we take a look at how Kubrick has made irony an art form, and tease out perhaps the greatest irony of all.
