Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), the state tree of Kerala, is a very familiar tree in the coastal belts across the world, especially the tropical eastern regions. Kerala and its people owe a lot to this tree, starting to its very name! Kerala means the 'Land of Coconuts', with Kera meaning coconut tree in local parlance. Coconut also plays a huge role in Kerala's economy as it is one of the main sources of income for many in the state. Coconut is highly versatile, with nearly all parts of it being put to different uses. From handicrafts to food products, coconut finds its use across various industries.
