Digital ID

The British state has a long-standing obsession with putting its citizens on a spreadsheet, and the current government has just dusted off Tony Blair’s old blueprint under a new guise: the Digital Access to Services Bill. We are told by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy that "everyone in the country will have a digital ID." It is framed with that familiar, patronising tone of modern governance: it is not "heavy-handed," but you must have one anyway if you ever want to earn a living in this country. The official justification is that this digital apparatus—complete with your name, date of birth, photo, and nationality data—will crush the shadow economy and stop illegal working in the gig economy.
