BMW E46 GM5 DOOR LOCK RELAY REPLACEMENT!

The GM5 door lock relay replacement is a very common necessity for BMW E46 & E39 models. What happens is, over time the material in the relays that activate the door locks breaks down and corrodes. This causes the relays to no longer make contact. Instead of replacing the whole GM5, it’s as simple as getting the relays replaced! It is not recommended to attempt to DIY this job since the board is resin coated and requires special equipment to properly desolder the relay pins without damaging the board.

I called around a ton and finally found a trustworthy shop called ITC Technology Solutions in Ontario, California. They took care of the soldering side of things for me. I highly suggest giving them a call if you’re local.

If you’re not local to that area and would like to find a shop, I highly suggest checking Yelp & Google Maps under “Electronics repair”. You’ll want to ask if the shop can desolder two 10 pin through-hole relays and solder in two new ones.
