Dark Mane joins his pride

Dark Mane is a male lion in Madikwe Game Reserve and he dominates the eastern territory.He is a very relaxed male and 7 years of age.
His name comes from the blackish hair he has and that dominates his mane.

Lion manes serve 3 purposes for male lions and they are pretty important for their existence.

1st reason is for their safety, the mane protects the neck from serious injury when the males fight each other.Creating a padded area around the arteries

2nd reason is for identification, its important for females to recognize males at a far distance so that they know if they are friendly males or competitors. Rival males pose a threat to the cubs and the pride as they would kill any young lions within.

3rd reason the mane makes the lion look bigger and bigger looks help with dominating rival males in the area.
